A Sport Worth Learning – Birding!
Birding! Sport or Hobby?
The purpose of Birding connects us with nature and helps us to better understand and be aware of the wildlife that surrounds us. However, there is a difference between watching nature and birding. Whereas “bird watchers” is a passive observation, “birding” is treated as a sport with the goal of seeking different species or types of birds. The art of birding goes beyond mere observation of winged wonders; it is an immersive journey.
Distinguishing itself from casual bird-watching, birding is a purposeful pursuit—a quest to unravel the intricate world of bird diversity. In the realm of birding, every gaze skyward is not just about seeing; it’s about seeking further understanding. It’s about delving into the fascinating world of various bird species, understanding their unique behaviors, and unlocking the secrets held in every feather. Birding is an intentional exploration with a goal in mind: to understand, learn, and find the beautiful creatures of the sky.
THE “HOW TO” OF BIRDING
Below is the starter pack for birding-the must knows as you begin this new adventure.
BE AN EXTRAORDINARY NOTETAKER.
When you see or recognize a bird, write down the details you observe. How are they acting? What colors are their feathers? What shape is
its head, beak and body? Then draw it before it flies away.
LEARN SOME BIRD ANATOMY!
Birds, just like humans, come in all shapes, sizes and colors. However, they have the same body parts. Having binoculars to get a closer look is crucial to see these kinds of differences. Knowing the bird’s anatomy can also help you differentiate them better and draw them more precisely.
LEARN THEIR BEHAVIORS.
Behavior observations can also help you narrow down the type of bird you are looking at. What are they doing? What are they interested in? Are they eating? If so, what are they eating? Do they fly and for how long? All of this will help you narrow down the specific species you are observing.
GET TO KNOW THE VARIATIONS.
With each species of bird there are also different variations within that. There are different characteristics, for example, between male and female. Other nuances such as their feathers, based on the time of the year and more!
All of that being said, there are no hard and fast rules to birding. It can be done however you please. Whether walking slowly or sitting on a bench or chair, you can go for a drive through a wildlife area, walk a trail or sit in a single spot to wait for birds to come out. Don’t take the list too seriously, just enjoy your surroundings and get acquainted.
