FOREST BATHING (SHINRIN-YOKU)
Forest bathing is a slow, mindful walk that invites you to engage your senses in nature. It is not a workout. It is an easy practice that encourages presence and calm. How to try it here:
- Choose a quiet trail segment.
- Silence your phone.
- Notice what you see, hear, smell, and feel for 20–30 minutes.
- Pause to breathe slowly before returning.
Why It Helps
Gentle time in the trees may reduce stress and support a sense of clarity.
BIRD WATCHING & STARGAZING
Our coastal hills and dark night skies offer natural moments of wonder.
Stargazing
- Best after moonset on clear nights
- Bring a light jacket and a red-light flashlight to protect night vision
Bird Watching
- Look for raptors riding the ridge, songbirds in the forest, and shorebirds near Tomales Bay
- Sunrise and late afternoon are the most active times
- Enhance your experience with birding and nature apps such as the Merlin Bird ID app (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) for quick bird identification by photo or sound, or iNaturalist (California Academy of Sciences & National Geographic, supported by UC scientists) to identify and record a wide variety of species.
Why It Helps
Quiet observation can lower stress and gently train attention. It is an easy way to feel connected to the landscape.
